Managing CRO Performance Without Micromanaging Your CRO

22 October 2026

Micromanaging a CRO feels like control and usually destroys it. The sponsor rewrites the monitoring report, joins every site call, and still cannot say whether the study is healthy. The CRO waits for instructions. Accountability becomes a shared fog.

Managing performance is different. It starts with a contract and a plan that say what "done" means: visit windows, report timing, query ageing, recruitment forecasts, and the issues that must be escalated rather than parked. Sponsor oversight then checks those commitments against evidence.

A light touch still needs teeth

Review a defined set of reports and metrics. Do not review every sentence unless the risk says you should. When a threshold breaks, name the owner and the next action. Independent oversight visits and monitoring-report review exist for the moments when the CRO's own account is not enough.

The line worth keeping is simple: you can outsource the activity. You cannot outsource accountability. Teams who want the operating detail can read what sponsor oversight is.
